Job Title: Minister of Music, First Congregational Church of Minnesota, United Church of Christ
Job Type: Permanent; Part-time
Work Hours: 20 hours/week; flexible in arrangement with Principal Minister
Contract Period: August 15 - June 15 (47-48 weeks)
Works with: All church staff; Music Committee
Reports to: Principal Minister
Evaluated by: Parish/Staff Relations Committee, with input from Music Committee,
the Principal Minister, other staff and the congregation
Salary and Benefits: Salary negotiated with Trustees; health and pension benefits provided

General Description:
The Minister of Music is responsible for the music life of the church, including the chancel choir, children’s music and instrumental music.


Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Plan and administer the music program for the church, in consultation with the Principal Minister and other church staff.
  2. Select repertoire for the chancel choir and the selection of instrumental music for worship services and special church events.
  3. Recruit and rehearse chancel choir, including one two- hour rehearsal per week on a week-day evening and a 45 minute rehearsal prior to Sunday worship.
  4. Lead chancel choir and congregation in all music in worship. Be available to serve as
    organist at weddings, funerals and other special services as schedule permits. Arrange for substitute in the event of absence.
  5. Plan and lead a children’s music program in consultation with the Board of Christian Education and the Minister of Education.
  6. Recruit and incorporate instrumentalists from the congregation in the music program.
  7. Monitor the condition and conduct routine maintenance of the church’s musical instruments
    and make recommendations to Music Committee and Board of Trustees regarding their up-keep.
  8. Prepare and participate in music for special services, i.e. Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday .


Job Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in music.
  2. Experience and demonstrated proficiency in keyboard performance with organ emphasis.
  3. Experience in the performance and selection of church organ and choral music which
    reflects a broad variety of musical periods and styles.
  4. Collegial approach to work with other, including choir members, musicians and staff.
  5. Appreciation of music as a part of worship, and sensitivity to the worship needs of the
    congregation.
