~ Some first impressions… ~

San Lucas from above

Guatemala is beautiful!

The land is lush. Green and vibrant. Full of sugar cane fields, banana trees, and coffee. A volcano steamed its welcome to us. And San Lucas… what a place nestled among these gorgeous mountains!

The people are beautiful, too.

We saw many on our way up. From boys trying to shine Wayne’s shoes at the airport, to people packed like sardines in trucks and vans, to the women in their traditional dress. We met Marta already, and it only took Eric five minutes to buy a shirt!

There is quite a bit of difference between rich and poor.

Economically I fit the rich category. I’ve spent this past week moving into my spacious 2-bedroom apartment in Minneapolis. Carpeted. Air-conditioned. Then to drive through these streets and towns. Houses with no water, no doors. What can I do? I have a feeling that the people I meet this week will teach me a lot about being rich in spirit. I look forward to learning from them.
