Learning a new card game

Andrés talking about the coffee project

  • Overheard among the Oak Grove kids carrying rocks at the Women’s Center today: “Girls don’t sweat, they glisten." (Response from the girl in question: “No, I’m an athlete. I sweat.”

  • The re-forestation project provides 45,000 saplings per year to various sites throughout Guatemala.

  • P. and A (or Panda) seems to be the group game this year—another game tonight before dinner, including all seven of us. We extrapolated from the original rules to accommodate a second deck of cards. Who knows if we’re playing it right, but it’s a fun game and people are good sports. –But Russ keeps getting skipped.

  • Shirt count: 5

  • Don Andrés does seem a great deal more subdued this year. He still has that great laugh and speaks of how he loves and God, and people, but the death of his wife has been huge.

  • I talked with Eber today, whom our previous group has worked with in some previous years. He remembered some of our folks’ names and asked about them—Nadia, Louis, and Jill in particular.

  • We’ve had a couple of downpours already but mostly the weather has been beautiful.

  • I’m noticing more cell phones among the locals this year, and a few more shops have gone upscale. And the hotel we’re staying in (Iquitiu), which is where we stayed in 2004) has—as of today—its own little computer room with Internet connections. Things are changing here.

  • Card game quotes:
“Sorry, buddy.” (or, Ann to Russ: “Skip you.”
                “Are you dealing again?”

  • T-shirt sayings:
Tranny Has heart (from Transfiguration Catholic Church, welcoming Fr. Bob Hart)
Body Piercing Saved My Soul (referring to the crucifixion)
                I am Not a Geek—I’m a 12th-level Paladin
                God Squad
We Work Ours So We Can Kick Yours (worn by Soccer Girl)
                Primero Jesucristo, Luego el Futbol
